Craig Mactavish has a long history with the Edmonton Oilers and will now be looking to source some additional business card printing in light of his new role with the team.
On Monday, Kevin Lowe, President of Hockey Operations for the team, announced to the press that Steve Tambellini had been released and that Craig Mactavish will replace him as the General Manager.
The move comes in the midst of a disappointing losing streak during a season that has not lived up to fan expectations. This campaign looked like it might be the season that the team would finally make it back to the playoffs, but the recent run of games has dampened those plans.
The Oilers have gone through a dramatic rebuilding phase since last reaching the playoffs in 2006, when they made it all the way to the Stanley Cup finals.
While the team has struggled for several seasons, one plus point has been in the acquisition of some fantastic young players. The addition of players like Taylor Hall, Jordan Eberle, Ryan-Nugent Hopkins, and Nail Yakupov, has created a young, energetic team that fans of the Oilers are excited to see on the ice.
Bringing Mactavish into the role of General Manager has been met with praise from the fans as well as the rest of the team. The change has addressed yet another critical position in what the Oilers organization believes is a fantastic team with the necessary talent to reach the playoffs and hopefully bring the Stanley Cup back to Edmonton.
