Alberta Craft Award winners chosen

The winners of the 7th annual Alberta Craft Awards have been chosen and will be exhibited at the Discovery Gallery in Edmonton from January 7-February 12, 2012. This is a free exhibit.

The Alberta Craft Awards recognizes the:

“value and contribution of individuals to Alberta’s fine craft culture.”

There were five categories and winners in all:

• Linda Stanier and Family Memorial Award (for craftsperson working in clay) – Voyager Art & Tile
• Award of Honour (for a volunteer, teacher, mentor, etc.) – Simon Wroot
• Award of Excellence, Contemporary (open to Alberta Craft Council member only) – Jackie Anderson
• Award of Excellence, Heritage (open to Alberta Craft Council member only) – Ilya Oratovsky
• Award of Achievement (for an emerging artist, Alberta Craft Council member only) Jennea Frischke

The Alberta Craft Council has been in operation since 1980 and there mission is to:

“promote, develop and advocate for fine craft in Alberta.”

In addition to the annual Alberta Craft Awards, they also occasionally call for entries for upcoming exhibits.

The Arts Craft Council, in association with the Canadian Bookbinders and Book Arts Guild are calling for entries for their Pulp Paper Pages exhibit. This will be a juried exhibit and the exhibit will run from April 14-July 7 at the Feather Gallery in Edmonton. They are looking for Alberta-based artists who work with paper and the book arts. The call for entries ends on February 15.

Paper is usually the medium we use for our printing; companies seem to waste more than they use. However, the paper itself can be a work of art depending on how it is created. Many of the artists who will be taking part in this exhibit make their own. It will be interesting to see how many ways paper can be used to create art.
