Soil workshop to help Calgary build better gardens

Savvy gardeners know that every great garden starts off with a fertile foundation, and an upcoming learning opportunity will teach Calgary residents how they can get started at building the soil in their garden beds.

A representative of the Acadia Community Garden and Arts Society will be giving the scoop on soil building, and it will start at the ground and work up. The participants will discover how they can amend their own planting medium so that it has what their plants need to thrive, and there are several topics for discussion on the agenda.

The facilitator will introduce the soil types that tend to be found in the local area, and the group will be introduced to the microbes and larger species, such as insects, that call it home. Soil amendments as well as how to choose the right ones for flowers and vegetable growing will be reviewed, and container planting will also be on the syllabus.

Along with the lecture portion of the workshop, the attendees will receive several hand outs and tips for performing soil tests at home. The host of any activity like this can count on local Stationery printers to supply them with Copies of any materials they plan to distribute.

This chance to learn some of the secrets of soil will begin at 6:30 pm on May 11th. If it can be held in person, it will take place at 332- 94th Avenue SE.
