Calgary’s St. Patrick's Island is a popular location for birds, and this December, it will serve as the venue for a holiday bird count.
A limited number of spots are available in the Christmas Bird Count, which will be open to all skill levels and is part of one of the largest citizen science activities that will be held this year.
Nature Calgary will have volunteers on hand for the experience, who may be able to help with identification. The participants can expect to spot eagles, waxwings, woodpeckers and the ubiquitous Canada goose, and they may even be able to catch sight of a lifer. There will be binoculars available for anyone who needs them, and while they watch for birds, they can learn more about their habits.
This opportunity to enjoy some birding is accessible to all, including those who require a mobility device. A guide will be on hand to lend assistance, and there will be provisions made for those who are visually or hearing impaired. Printed field guides for an event can be prepared by Stationery printers, and they may be able to incorporate braille or other raised elements for accessibility.
This visit to St. Patrick’s Island for the 2023 Christmas Bird Count will be offered on December 17th. The registrants will gather at 656 Confluence Way SE.
