The Calgary Food Bank has seen a sharp increase in usage by the public this past year, and a large donation that was recently made to the organization will help to ensure that it can continue to meet the needs of those less fortunate.
The contribution, which totaled $6 million, was received from the CEO of Shaw Communications, Mr. Brad Shaw.
According to James Stauch, who is the director of the Institute for Community Prosperity at mount Royal University, though not-for-profits do tend to compete for the public’s support, a contribution as generous as this one is usually met with a very positive response.
Janeen Webb, who is the director of donor relation for the charity Inn from the Cold, remarked that it shows the generosity of the human spirit that people are willing to do what they can to make sure that no one goes hungry or falls through the cracks of the social safety net. Her thoughts were aligned with those of Carlene Donnelly, who heads the Calgary Urban Project Society. Both of these organizations have clients who will be able to make good use of the food bank’s services.
