Youth centre a step closer to reality

A tender has been accepted for the refurbishment and fit out of the Rockingham Youth Centre, with work scheduled to begin later this year.

The City of Rockingham recently accepted LKS Constructions to build the multipurpose facility on MacKinnon Street. The new centre, to include staff from Council's Youth Services and Youth Development teams, will host community events, forums, skill development sessions and workshops in spaces such as activity rooms and counselling rooms.

Mayor Barry Sammels said the facility is designed for the community's youth aged between 12 and 24 and to provide opportunities for them to learn leadership and job readiness skills those relating to entrepreneurship and social innovation.

In addition, it will provide young people with a safe space to relax or do their homework after school. Those attending the centre will also have an opportunity to build life skills, according to the Mayor who added:

“Growing and nurturing community connectedness and wellbeing, and planning for future generations are two key aspirations in the City’s Strategic Community Plan 2019-2029, and this facility will play an important role in fulfilling these aspirations for young people.”

Activities available at centres such as the Youth Centre are often advertised via flying printing campaigns in the local area.

The project, which is expected to be finished by 2021, was made possible by a Lotterywest contribution of $985,000 with Council allocating $2.35 million.
