Vying for Non-Acquisitive and Acquisitive awards prizes totalling $20,000, entrants in the annual awards will focus on a ‘space’ theme for 2019. Each artist will have an opportunity to compete in a range of categories including Emerging, Open, Indigenous, Heritage, Youth and Local Resident as well as a newly introduced 3D category.
The awards are expected to represent Western Australia’s cultural diversity, according to Mayor Barry Sammels who added:
“The City’s annual Art Awards provide artists both young and old with a fantastic opportunity to showcase their creative talents.”
The competition is open to all levels of artists from beginners through to established artists whose works have already been part of public exhibitions. Competitions such as this often use poster printing to attract entrants. The Mayor said the theme provides artists with plenty of scope saying:
“Whether it is making space for a home, a space for thought or a space for sharing with family and friends, artists in the 2019 Art Awards are invited to show us what space means to them.”
The public will have an opportunity to view selected artwork at a special exhibition to be held from May 4-19, 2019 at the Rockingham Arts Centre and Gary Holland Community Centre. Art Award entries will close on February 22, 2019.
