Scholarship scheme provides opportunities for tertiary studies

It has been announced that the City of Rockingham's Tertiary Scholarship Scheme (TSS) is to continue for another three years.

The scheme, which was established to assist residents between the ages of 17 and 40 to finish their tertiary education, was approved for extension by the council recently.

The aim of the TSS is to support students who are already enrolled in a VET/TAFE diploma or undergraduate university degree, or those who are in receipt of a tertiary institution offer for the very first time.

According to Mayor of Rockingham Barry Sammels, the TSS is helping students overcome some of the obstacles faced when participating in tertiary studies, such as transport, accommodation, book or technology requirements and living expenses. He added:

"Since the TSS was implemented, 65 applicants have benefitted from the scheme and a third of the scholarship recipients have also reported that they would not have been able to complete their course of study without it."

Sammels said issues like complex living situations and educational costs were identified when the council was putting together the 2018-2023 Children and Young People Strategy.

Students and those considering options for further tertiary qualifications have often been alerted to scholarship opportunities such as the TSS via strategic flyer printing campaigns.

It is hoped the council's positive response to continuing the TSS for three more years will encourage more students in the local community to work towards achieving their individual academic goals.
