Rockingham Volunteer Resource Centre in search of helpers

A volunteer at Rockingham’s Volunteer Resource Centre is hoping to recruit more volunteers herself.

Lorna Petchell, who comes from Safety Bay, has been making things happen at the Rockingham Volunteer Resource Centre (RVRC). Petchell is retired and wants to contribute to society. Printing services can be particularly useful for organisations in the third sector.

Petchell is on the lookout for volunteers, but understands why people can be reluctant to put themselves forward, because a range of barriers that can limit the participation of individuals from Rockingham. For example, many people can be concerned about whether or not a charitable organisation will be too demanding in its requirements from them. Petchell told the Weekend Courier:

“The organisations know and respect a person’s other commitments; they will work around you. Even half a day a week will make a huge difference. I think it’s a matter of finding what you want who helps other volunteers find work suitable to their needs and lifestyle.”

Petchell knows that volunteering can be a big step in psychological terms. Some individuals volunteer in the aftermath of bereavement, and she stresses that giving something back can be highly rewarding.

The resource centre is located within Rockingham Central Library (RCL, situated on Dixon Road. At the moment, the RVRC is open four days per week, but closed during the school holidays. Those interested in volunteering can contact volunteering@rockingham.wa.gov.au.
