The City of Rockingham has obtained a total of five million dollars in road safety funding, which is to be delivered by the federal and Western Australian governments over the next two years.
The funding, which is the most provided to any Western Australian metropolitan local government, will be allocated across 11 discrete projects to address ‘Blackspot’ concerns. Making up a significant portion of the funding is a project along Mundijong Road, which has been allocated $2.9 million dollars. The curvature of the road will be realigned, and streetlights and barriers will be added to the stretch between Duckpond Road and Telephone Lane.
Other sizeable works include $975,000 budgeted for street widening, median island installation and street light upgrades along Baldivis Road between Fifty Road and Kerosene Lane, and additional allocations of $422,000 and $559,000, respectively, to improve safety at the key intersections of Mandurah Road roundabout with Safety Bay Road and Centaurus and Read Streets with Chalgrove Avenue.
The Mayor of Rockingham, Barry Sammels, applauded the funding allocation as an important step towards the city’s Road Safety Action Plan, saying:
“The Blackspot funding the City has secured from both the federal and State Government will play a key role in boosting safety for motorists across the community.”
