The Castaways Sculpture Awards exhibition is a highlight on Rockingham’s calendar, and entries for this competition are still open.
Every year since 2008, the competition celebrates two matters close to the hearts of Rockingham residents – recycling and art. This community loves its artists, and these awards offer professional and emerging artists the chance to create works from recycled materials, in order to promote awareness of the environment.
The deadline for this year’s competition has been extended to this Friday, June 23, and the finished sculptures will be displayed along the Rockingham foreshore from October 28 to November 5. Last year’s exhibition of 50 entries drew crowds in excess of 15,000. Imaginative 2016 entries included dolphins, birds and mythical creatures, and a whale made from plastic water bottles.
Competitions of this kind also provide opportunities for tourism for the Rockingham area, and Print companies are sure to produce items such as postcards, as well as holiday cards and calendars for next year, showing the award-winning pieces.
Entry to the competition is free, and all sculptures should be created from recyclable objects. The combined prizes total $20,000, in eight categories, including Sustainable Living, People’s Choice and Voter’s Prize. There is also a Collective Art Award for entries from educational or other community groups.
Details about how to enter can be found on the Rockingham Community Art and Culture website.
