Recycled aluminium to feature in sculpture awards

The foreshore of Rockingham Beach is set to be transformed as part of this year's Castaways Sculpture Awards.

In addition to the main exhibition being featured on Rockingham Foreshore, the Castaways event will also see Rockingham Arts Centre host a Small Sculpture and Maquette display, while an exhibition of entries from schools will be the major focus at Churchill Park.

A prize pool in excess of $26,000 is up for grabs in the competition, which offers a number of categories. There is also a special Alcoa Major Award worth $10,000 to be presented to the artist who shows excellence overall in producing a recycled sculpture with a component of aluminium.

Barry Sammels, Rockingham Mayor, said aluminium is totally recyclable and will once again be a key product to feature in the 2020 awards, which has already uncovered many talented artists who have created innovative sculptures using aluminium. He added:

“For over a decade Castaways has given aspiring and experienced artists a platform to showcase their creative abilities, and aluminium is one of the materials that has been at the forefront of some truly incredible pieces of work.”

Promotional Products such as Postcards that help market the local area to tourists have often featured eye-catching artworks such as the ones on display during the Castaways Awards.

The 2020 exhibition, to be held from October 24 to November 1, will also feature the work of previous Sustainability Award winner Richard Aitken.
