Since its launching in 2014, LitterBusters has helped to clean up Rockingham from illegally discarded waste.
Until now, the team has cleared up over 1,100 tonnes of rubbish in the city. Apart from litter removal, the LitterBuster team also works on investigation, surveillance, and prosecution of parties and individuals engaged in the illegal discarding of rubbish. The efforts of LitterBusters have resulted in overall cleaner public areas in Rockingham.
LitterBusters is the brainchild of a Customer Satisfaction Survey performed many years ago on residents in the area, which indicated that litter issues were high on the participants’ list of priorities. The team also has an interesting Logo Design – a blue aluminium can replacing the ghost in the typical logo for the film franchise Ghostbusters.
According to Barry Sammels, Mayor of the City of Rockingham, this were the first council in WA to come up with a 24 hours on-call basis response team which is available all days of the week. The LitterBusters team is frequently busy responding to rubbish clean-up requests of customers.
A range of methods are available for Rockingham residents to report litter they spot in specific areas, including a specific mobile app. Each year, the team received an average of 2,000 requests from the public via the app, online, and the dedicated call line.
