Grant to provide funds for Rockingham youth centre upgrades

A youth centre in Rockingham will benefit from a grant to be used to refurbish the centre.

The Rockingham Youth Centre has received $985,000 from Lotterywest and intends to use the funds to upgrade the centre, as a recreational and educational facility for young, local people.

The facility will be used to create a space for young people to mix and learn together in a safe environment. A variety of workshops will be offered, as well as educational programmes. Space will also be available for study and recreation, with the opportunity for the young people to meet socially with each other.

Other groups will also be run out of the centre, with the Skate Park Reference Group, Junior Council, and Youth Reference Group to use the venue for leadership training. Poster printing may be used to promote local groups in the area.

Western Australian premier, Mark McGowen, who presented the centre with the cheque, said he was proud that he could support the local community by funding resources to help young people become more engaged in their communities. With the number of residents in Rockingham between the ages of 12 and 24 expected to rise sharply in the coming years, the centre will now be fit for purpose to cater for the future needs and demands of a growing community, says McGowen.
