Artistic recycling to be showcased in Rockingham

Repurposed and reused materials will be the focus of a special exhibition available to view in the Rockingham area.

The Castaways Sculpture Awards was a community project that began in 2008 as a means of raising awareness of discarded items (known as ‘castaways’) washed up on the beach. The exhibition has only grown in attention and stature, and now lasts a week, with a prize fund of $27,000 across 10 categories, including People’s Choice awards.

There are three exhibitions included – the main exhibition, the school’s competition on the Rockingham Foreshore and the small sculpture items at the Rockingham Arts Centre. In addition to the exhibitions, there are talks by visiting artists, workshops in which to participate, a photo competition and lots of educational activities. Guided beachcombing is a popular activity with families of all ages, and is led by Perth NRM’s Coastal and Marine Coordinator.

The Guest Artist for this year’s awards is Denise Pepper, who has won many prizes for her colourful and playful works. The Curator is Lyn Di Ciero, a visual arts writer and filmmaker. Colourful brochure printing will accompany the exhibition.

The Castaways Sculpture Awards takes place from Saturday 21st October at 9am, daily until Sunday 29th October at 5pm. There are exhibits on the Rockingham Foreshore and at the Rockingham Arts Centre, and the exhibition is free to visit.
