Youth week competition puts focus on visions of city

Footscray youth with a talent for photography, writing and visual arts have been invited to take part in a competition to showcase their abilities.

The National Youth Week Art, Writing and Photography Competition is an initiative of the Maribyrnong Youth Services.

The theme for this year’s competition is ‘Your Vision for Our City’ and, according to organisers, participants will be vying for more than $500 in prizes in the categories of Visual Arts, Photography and Writing.

The available categories are widespread with writers able to enter short stories, song lyrics, journal pieces, journalistic articles and poetry.

The Visual Art section includes sculpture, fashion design, craft, graphic design, digital art, drawing, photography, painting, and street art.

The third category of Photography incorporates film, digital, and smartphone.

According to organisers, the theme ‘Your Visions for Our City’ will provide entrants with an opportunity to provide an insight into their vision for the City of Maribyrnong including the suburbs of Footscray, Yarraville, Seddon, Tottenham, Braybrook, Kingsville and West Footscray.

Judges will award points for content and the message’s impact, artistic merit and originality.

Entries, which are already being taken, will close on April 8, with winners announced at a special event on April 15.

Workshops to assist artists, photographers and writers with their entries will be held on March 30 and 31 at Footscray’s Phoenix Youth Centre.
