Registrations for 2012 Raw Comedy are now open.
Since 1996, the Melbourne International Comedy Festival has been producing RAW Comedy, Australia’s largest open mic comedy competition. The competition is staged nationally every single year from January to April and now the poster printing has been done and the Signs are all over town trying to coax the next Chris Lilley into the spotlight.
RAW Comedy has been a launching pad for such comedians such as Josh Thomas, Peter Helliar, Hannah Gadsby, Claire Hooper, Michael Workman and Tim Minchin.
The competition has heats in every capital city, and some regional locations, where you perform a five-minute routine of original, funny material. A professional comedian hosts the heats and the public is welcome to attend and show their support for the contestants.
The best new comedians from the heats continue onto sem-finals and then to the State Final. The best acts from all of the state finals get to compete in the National Final, which is the show that is held at the Melbourne Town Hall and recorded by ABC1 for broadcast. The RAW Comedy National Champion gets the opportunity to go to the Edinburgh Festival Fringe to compete in So You Think You’re Funny? competition.
In Victoria heats are being held at the Evelyn Hotel, Fitzroy (14 January); Corner Hotel, Richmond (21 January); Northcote Social Club, Northcote (28 January); The Esplanade Hotel, St Kilda (4 February); East Brunswick Club, East Brunswick (11 February); The Evelyn Hotel, Fitzroy (18 February); Footscray Community Arts Centre, Footscray and the Geelong Performing Arts Centre, Geelong ((18 February).
The Victorian State Final will be back at the Evelyn Hotel on the 19 March starting at 6.30pm.
