Art to be celebrated at Footscray festival

Footscray and its surrounding areas are set to be filled with colour later this month, when the Big West Festival takes place.

The show is a biennial event, which focuses on Melbourne’s western suburbs and encourages local people to enjoy art and take part in creative activities.

The events begin with an opening night party at the Footscray Community Arts Centre. This celebration will have a construction theme and children are encouraged to build a recycled city using bales of recycled paper. Youngsters will also enjoy the interactive robotic sculptures on display, and attendees can dress up to take part in the opening parade.

Other events at the Arts Centre include a Chinese shadow puppet performance by local primary school children, a needlepoint depiction of Melbourne suburbs and a giant mobile that lights up at night.

On the last day of the festival, Footscray’s streets around Little Saigon Market will be the focus of celebration, with a street party including art competitions, live music and performances.

Other activities will be taking place around the City of Maribyrnong, with special events set to be held in Newport and Braybrook.

With so going on during the festival, residents should look out for Posters advertising the various venues, so they do not miss anything. Event organisers often work with local printing companies when it comes to producing Posters and Brochures.

The festival will take place from Friday November 22 until Sunday December 1. Most activities are free but some need to be booked in advance. For more information and to download the full programme of events, visit the event’s official website.
