Residents urged to help clean up streets by reporting litterers online

Anyone thinking about littering the streets of Narre Warren, Victoria, or surrounding areas within the City of Casey may want to think again.

The council is urging residents to use its online form, which is accessible via smart devices or mobile phones, to shed light on the area’s litterers.

Mayor Geoff Ablett said the council wanted to make it easier for locals to report any cases of littering, a practice that is not tolerated in the city.

The initiative has already seen follow-up action taken to uncover the identity of three suspects of rubbish dumping in Cranbourne West. The online information received included a video, pictures, and details of a car.

Cr Ablett applauded the informant, saying it was a great example of how residents and the local authority could join forces to tackle the illegal dumping of rubbish in the area.

He added that if people witnessed someone littering, they should quickly write down relevant details and submit them on a report to council.

Dumped rubbish costs the City of Casey an estimated $800,000 a year.

Flyer printing and media reports are being used to spread the word of the new initiative to keep Casey clean.

As part of council law and the Environment Protection Act, the City of Casey officers have the ability to investigate and enforce infringements on offenders.

On-the-spot fines of between $295 and $1771 may also be issued. Dropping a lit cigarette could also cost offenders $590.
