New initiative to inspire creativity in schools

Schools across Victoria, including Narre Warren, are set to benefit from a State Government initiative to boost jobs for individuals in creative industries by providing additional learning experiences for children.

In excess of 150 positions for professionals within the creative industries, such as writers, filmmakers, musicians, designers and artists, will be created under the Creative Workers in Schools programme. Its aim is to provide teachers and students with additional learning experiences, with students up to Year 10 able to add to their creative skills in a number of areas.

Employment Minister Jaala Pulford said the latest initiative will see creatives receive mentorship, training and on-the-job support, and those participating will be placed at schools based on their goals and skills. She added:

“One in four creative workers have lost their jobs as a result of the pandemic – we’re giving artists a unique employment opportunity which also offers enormous benefits to Victorian students and teachers.”

Training for creatives will start in January 2021, with teaching assignments to run over two stages within the first three terms at government schools. The positions are scheduled to begin in the first term.

As part of the introduction of educational initiatives such as this, flyer printing campaigns to explain the content and types of new courses to be introduced have often been rolled out.

Regional Arts Victoria will deliver the programme, which follows the long-running creative education initiative.
