Headspace National Youth Mental Health Foundation will be presenting a specialised training package for staff working in secondary schools, to help them identify and respond to suicide risk in young people.
The course is for staff currently working for the Department of Education and Training in Victoria and is aimed primarily at leading teachers, year level co-ordinators, or wellbeing co-ordinators in secondary schools.
Course participants will gain better understanding of mental health issues among secondary school students, learn about the different levels of risk, how to respond to them and how to support students at risk. They will also gain a better understanding of self-harm and suicidal behaviour in young people.
Planning a response and engaging with students plus referral to other services, to ensure students get ongoing care and support, will also be covered. During the training, participants will work through case studies where they will apply their learning from the course along with their own experience.
Courses such as this often use printing services to create resources for participants to take away with them.
The Suicide Risk Continuum Training will be held on Monday 24th June, from 8:45am to 4pm at Headspace Narre Warren, 66 Victor Crescent. The training is free and tea and coffee will be available but participants will need to provide their own lunch.
