A theatrical dance piece entitled ‘96’ has been chosen for the State Final of the Wakakirri Competition.
The name Wakakirri means ‘to dance a story’ and comes from a tradition started by the Wangaaypuwan people. There are various categories for different age groups, and the Wakakirri competition is open to all schools in Australia.
One such school is Berwick Lodge Primary School, on the border between Narre Warren and Berwick in the City of Casey.
Teacher Lorraine Montgomery saw a documentary on the Hillsborough Disaster in Sheffield, UK of 1989 and its aftermath. She shared the story with her grade five and six pupils, and together they decided that their dance story should be a tribute to those affected by the tragedy, which occurred during a soccer match between Liverpool and Nottingham Forest.
The school presented ‘96’ at the Frankston Arts Centre in August, where it was well received and won the award for ‘Best Historical Story’. It was also aided by Logo Design, winning the award for ‘Best T-shirt Design’ for the T-Shirts designed by a Grade Six pupil. The show was selected for the State Final at the Hamer Hall in Melbourne on September 18.
Montgomery is proud that her pupils have honoured the memory of what happened in 1989, as well as their families who never gave up their fight for justice.
