Providing information and support for young people is the key objective for staff at the newly opened Youth Information Centre in Narre Warren, Victoria.
The official opening was conducted by the mayor of Casey, Cr Geoff Ablett, who said the Council was committed to providing improved access for youth to information, special programs, advice, and counselling.
He said youth represented about a 25 per cent of Casey’s population, and the unique challenges they faced required a responsive process to assist them along the way.
Limited public transport flagged a number of issues for the young, including a difficulty in accessing facilities and services.
The new centre is part of a larger plan to develop a Casey Youth Hub that would effectively provide greater access to a wide range of agencies capable of assisting young people.
Ablett said the services covered career guidance, health promotion, sexual health information, mental health, drug and alcohol services, material and child health, and multicultural youth services.
He added that young people could call the centre and receive quality advice in a friendly and safe environment.
The City of Casey now hosts three youth centres, including Hampton Park, Cranbourne, and Narre Warren.
A flyer printing campaign could be used by the council to inform young people in the area of the new service, which is located at 52 Webb Street, Narre Warren. It operates Monday to Friday from 1.30 to 5.30pm.
