Headspace opens to help local youth in need

Narre Warren, Victoria, has a new Headspace facility aimed at helping the region's youth.

Anthony Byrne, Holt MP, paid a visit to the facility during Youth Week in April, and received a briefing from staff on the mental health service’s operations.

Targeting people aged 12 to 25, Headspace provides mental health information and support.

The new facility also includes a Helping Young People Early (HYPE) service, and an Early Psychosis Prevention Centre (EPPIC).

Mr Byrne said Headspace Narre Warren came about due to the active campaigning of young people throughout the local government area of Casey.

He said that now that the facility was operational, it was important to help spread the word about Headspace's great benefits for youth in the area. This could be done via flyer printing, word of mouth, or media coverage which had contributed, he said, to the centre becoming a reality.

Melbourne's south-east region already had an existing facility at Dandenong, when the first community push for a similar service in Narre Warren kicked off in 2013.

It was assisted by an ABC Four Corners programme, which reported on a youth suicide summit held in Casey.

Narre Warren Headspace, which is expected to hold an official opening soon, is easily accessible at 66 Victor Crescent. It opens from 11am to 7pm, Tuesday to Friday, and 10am to 2.30pm Saturdays.
