As the Cultural Threads Festival of 2016 begins to wind down, Dandenong and nearby suburbs such as Hampton Park and Narre Warren have once again found themselves entranced by all things textile.
The festival, which is in its third year, is hosted by the City of Greater Dandenong and is a collection of culturally diverse textiles and textile art. Having got underway on July 28, the event involves a variety of workshops, activities for adults and children, plus exhibitions involving textile arts including weaving, knitting, dyeing and crocheting.
One particular example from the festival that has brought people together is a Community Peace quilt, which is now on display in Dandenong Library. The quilt is made up of nearly 200 hexagon-shaped pieces, with each section being created by a member of the local community and having an individualised design, layout and often culturally diverse style.
The artist who facilitated the quilt’s creation is Emma Anna, and she explained how the process of creating the quilt had united people She said:
“The general experience of people sitting and sewing together, sharing stories and meeting new people has been really beautiful to watch. We have these nice little experiences where kids can work with adults, or people from different parts of the world work together.”
While the display of the quilt will only continue until Wednesday, August 31, images of the quilt and its messages of harmony are expected to be used in Postcards, Flyers and Promotional Products for next year’s festival.
