Community Learning Centre gets new funding

Students in Casey have been given a lifeline in their attempt to complete their schooling thanks to a last minute funding approval.

The students have been in the process of completing their year 11 and 12 equivalency at the Narre Warren Community Learning Centre.

Unfortunately, they discovered at the beginning of the year that funding had not been secured for 2013. The funding cuts also meant that a further 170 students in mainstream schooling, who were also supported by the Learning Centre, would be impacted.

In a case of better late than never, the funding approval of $350,000, although much appreciated, had delayed school starting dates for affected students until mid-February. Community Learning Centre CEO Wayne Hewitt attributed government rule changes toward non-profit providers for the delay. He said:

“I’m a bit of a stickler for these things, but I would have thought a contract for the 2013 year would have been finalised in 2012.”

The Education Department, however, attributed the funding delay to the centre’s initial application not meeting the criteria for funding. A spokeswoman for the department stated that organisations hoping for government funding toward training must meet financial viability and quality standards.

Hoping to avoid a similar scenario next year, Mr Hewitt will be pushing for a greatly improved process of application for 2014.

Narre Warren printing services would also appreciate earlier approval, enabling them to provide Stationery printing, Letterheads, and study related materials for the beginning of the school year, in order to help student achieve the best possible academic results.
