Bearded posties raise funds with epic bike trek

Two friends from Narre Warren have raised almost $3,000 for Save the Children by growing beards and journeying across Australia on modified postie bikes.

After a previous trip around Vietnam, Phil Cerbu came up with a charity adventure idea which comprised bikes, facial hair, and donations. Accompanied by his friend Anthony Tutuian, he then set off on the epic journey which saw the pair cover a total distance of 8,000km.

Explaining how the idea came about, Phil said:

“With the amount of money you’d pay for an airfare, we bought postie bikes and decided to do something around Australia.”

Phil wanted to use the trip to help a worthy cause, and his time overseas had made him realise the difficulties that many children face. It was then he decided to team up with Save the Children. The pair also decided to grow out their facial hair to attract further attention, and adopted the title of ‘The Bearded Posties’.

The friends completed the trip in five weeks, starting from Mr Cerbu’s home in Narre Warren. They initially headed across the freezing Victorian Alps, then to Mildura, before working their way to Alice Springs and Uluru. After crossing the Gulf of Carpentaria, the duo headed east, arriving at Port Douglas before riding down the east coast to complete their journey in Brisbane.

The endeavour was a remarkable success considering the simple premise. Charities like Save the Children often use the help of printing companies to attract publicity, and with imagery depicting the two bearded friends, Postcards and Posters were sure to be successful.
