Shoppers and diners in Geelong, Victoria’s Malop Street, will soon experience the benefits of a funky new popup urban space as part of the City of Greater Geelong’s ‘City in the Park’ initiative.
Geelong Mayor Darryn Lyons said the innovation will temporarily transform an area between Yarra and Moorabool Streets into a relaxed environment complete with trees, plants, grass and improvised street furniture.
He said the aim of the installation was to activate the space and provide greater opportunities for locals to enjoy al fresco dining in a unique and colourful environment.
As part of the initiative, a number of temporary changes will be made in the street, including a new green median, street trees planted in pots, additional seating, improved pocket parks and bike paths, and the establishment of al fresco areas strategically located in key areas along the street.
Mayor Lyons said temporarily changing urban spaces in this way was not confined to Geelong but rather a trend in tactical urbanism that was happening around the world in cities like Berlin, San Francisco and New York.
The theme was often featured on postcard printing in popular locations and, according to the mayor, would be a great public attraction during its temporary stay, which runs from October through to the New Year.
He added it provided a great opportunity to liven up the urban areas and create an inviting and fun vibe.
