A Victoria-exclusive production showcasing a significant change in women’s football is being enacted in Geelong in October.
Suzie Miller, a playwright best known for Prima Facie, Inter Alia and RBG: Of Many, One, is the writer of this new play that documents the creation of AFL Women’s (AFLW) after a report in 2010 called for its creation.
By 2017, the AFLW had evolved after a mammoth effort by all concerned. Directed by Sarah Giles, the piece highlights the characters that were instrumental in making it happen and is a love letter to community and the popular game.
Miller has said that her drive to write the play came from a sense of exclusion around women playing football when she was growing up. They were there in their droves, but never received recognition or support from professionals. The play recognises the strength of women who collaboratively built the AFLW, reflecting the determination and pride that went into building the legacy that will serve to help generations of girls and women in the future.
