Shoppers’ frustrations over getting back to parking metres before they run out of time could be abated this Christmas, with the help of new technology.
The innovation, which has been introduced into Geelong, Victoria CBD, allows shoppers to access parking metres from wherever they are using their mobile phones.
The mobile phones must be equipped with the EziCom ePay app, which is free, according to Councillor Michelle Heagney.
She said the software allows shoppers to top up their meters remotely without having to return to the car. Whether dining in a restaurant or café, or standing in a checkout queue, the need to race back to the car to feed the meter has been extinguished.
It would also be helpful when tasks took a little longer than expected, such as visiting a Print company to determine the design of new Stationery.
People will also be able to receive an SMS alert to advise when the metre is in need of more funds.
Cr Heagney said the parking innovation was sparked by consultation with community members, which brought to light discontent over returning to vehicles and finding fines because parking metres had run out.
