Locals to have say on proposed plaza in Highton

A proposal to develop a new public plaza in Highton, near Geelong, is currently open for public consultation.

The Draft Highton Village Urban Design Framework (UDF) seeks to establish a public plaza that includes greenery, more trees, a play area, seating and space for public events and street-trading.

Also included in the draft plan is a management strategy for traffic and parking, proposed upgrades for streetscapes along Barrabool Road and adjoining laneways, guidelines affecting the design of new buildings with a view to protecting the low-scale character of the village, and plans for managing the loading of heavy vehicles over the long-term.

Community input into the project, including a design workshop attended by 130 traders and residents in November 2016, has contributed to the project’s development to this stage, according to a City of Geelong spokesperson, but more is invited prior to Council making its final decision.

He said Council provided a number of opportunities in Belle Vue Avenue during the month for visitors and residents to view a graphic design and speak directly with staff about the project.

Public comments relating to the Draft Highton Village UDF will continue to be received until September 26.
