Postcard printing in Geelong, Victoria will have another subject to feature when the area’s history is celebrated on a huge mural in the CBD.

The artistic work is being undertaken by Cam Scale, who is a renowned street artist. The Brougham Street Port of Geelong building will be the back drop for Scale’s 20-metre high artwork titled ‘To the Unknown Mariner’.

Funding for the public art piece project, which was commissioned by the City of Greater Geelong, has been made available through the Laneways and Linkages project.

According to a council spokesman, the artwork represents another key inclusion in the city’s Public Art Strategy, which consists of a huge collection of monuments and artworks scattered throughout the area’s streets, foreshores, and parks.

Andy Richards, who holds the City portfolio of Arts and Culture said there would be much to love about the new mural when completed, including the fact that it will capture the imagination and, due to its prominence, will be able to be viewed from many vantage points across the city.

A stroll to the waterfront via a laneway from the mural in Brougham Street is an invitation many are certain to accept, according to Richards. He added that such displays of public art significantly enhanced buildings within the Geelong CBD, sparking conversations and even emotions among those who view it.
