A new civic precinct for Geelong is a step closer with the recent announcement that the Council has shortlisted three potential developers.
The top three of 11 contenders were selected following intense evaluation and consideration by a City of Greater Geelong committee of officers plus a Finance Review Panel and Design Review Panel of experts.
The Business Cards of each shortlisted company read like a who’s who of Australia’s top architectural firms including Fender Katsalidis of epc.Pacific, Quintessential Equity featuring Cox Architecture, and Raffles Chatter Pty Ltd featuring Grimshaw Architects and locally-based Chandler Architecture.
Bruce Harwood, mayor of Geelong, said each of the firms on the short list had presented outstanding proposals, adding:
“They each bring leading architects capable of delivering a building befitting Geelong’s status as a clever and creative UNESCO City of Design.
“The potential for this project is huge, and we are determined to see the precinct become a world class area that the Geelong community is proud of.”
The mayor said each company has been asked for creativity in their approach to funding arrangements and design, including investigating opportunities that could generate increased investment in the area.
Council is also looking at the establishment of a ‘government hub’ within the new precinct.
The successful developer is expected to be announced in August 2019, followed by the commencement of work in April 2020 and completion in July 2022.
