Geelong to host Japanese Summer Festival

The inaugural Japanese festival will take place in Geelong this December.

The Geelong Japanese Summer Festival 2018 is being held to welcome the Consulate-General of Japan in Melbourne for the event’s opening ceremony.

It will include a range of family-friendly activities. Live entertainers will include Wadaiko Rindo, A.UA, Miyakekai, Yosakoi Zen and Ichimadin. Traditional Japanese beverages, food and products will be on offer alongside games and arts and craft stalls.

Families are encouraged to attend and enjoy the free kids craft workshop, Bon-odori (traditional circle dance) contests and Cosplay/dress up contests. Events such as this are sometimes advertised with the help of flyer printing services.

Martial Arts demonstrations and workshops will be scheduled throughout the day featuring Judo, Karate, Aikido and Laido groups.

An authentic ‘Zen’-art area is planned where attendees can experience traditional Japanese culture through demonstrations and workshops. Featured arts include calligraphy, Kimono dressing, flower arrangement and a tea ceremony.

The event has been organised by the Japanese Association of Geelong, a group formed in 2017 that aims to promote goodwill and positive cultural exchange between communities.

The inaugural Geelong Japanese Summer Festival will take place on December 1st at Diversitat Northern Community Hub on Arunga Avenue in Norlane. Further details about the event schedule and admission prices can be found on the Japanese Association of Geelong and What’s on in Geelong websites.
