The City of Geelong has announced its plans for a new civic space, which is to be known as Wurriki Nyal. The name, which is from the Wadawurrung language, means “speak and talk together”.
In partnership with Quintessential Equity, the City of Greater Geelong Civic Precinct will be developed as a community and commercial hub for the greater Geelong region. Funding for a proposed second commercial building comes from Quintessential Equity, which will own and operate the facility. The commercial premises will be named Ngytan Koriayo, which means “look over the water, see all around Corio Bay”. The building will have expansive views of the bay to be enjoyed by staff and visitors.
The Wadawurrung traditional owners have worked closely with the city and Quintessential Equity to grant special use of the Wadawurrung language for this project, which marks an unprecedented collaboration between the traditional owners, Greater Geelong and commercial interests. A spokesperson for the developers said the company hoped the names would remind citizens and visitors of the traditional owners’ ongoing connection to the land.
