Colourful flower displays could see growth in city centre

Garden planters hanging at key points throughout the city centre have been installed as part of the council’s Greening of Geelong initiative.

Fytogreen, Victoria-based plant technology specialists, erected the elevated planters in Geelong’s Union Street.

The move to introduce more plant life and colour into the main shopping precinct was part of a City in the Park initiative driven by Mayor Darryn Lyons.

In October last year, split level-style planter Boxes were installed along Little Malop, Moorabool and Malop streets. These are now filled with purple statice, papaya popsicle and bougainvillea.

The idea, according to Cr Lyons, is to develop a city in a park. He said the ultimate aim was to create a vibrant, inviting and leafy environment – one that would encourage people to stay longer and help revitalise the heart of the city.

The latest installation of raised plant boxes is expected to take a few months before the full visual impact has been achieved.

According to the city’s design manager, Felix Hemingway, if managed well the planters could develop into colourful additions to enhance the urban framework, as growth patterns camouflage the boxes from view.

Further plant box installations are planned for the pedestrian junction in Malop Street, between Market Square and Westfield Geelong shopping centres.

While the potential of using the new planter features for future postcard printing promotional campaigns was not discussed Mayor Lyons, he said the concept would be much admired by other cities around the country and could act as a drawcard to visitors.
