Australia Post initiative aims to boost local digital savviness

An initiative to help people living in Geelong learn more about modern technology, and how to participate effectively in the digital age, has been introduced by Australia Post.

Geelong City Council has supported the move, dubbed the National Year of Digital Inclusion, which will see organisations encouraged to host events specifically to teach digital skills to people, as well as include them in a schedule of events planned as part of the programme.

According to Councillor Rod Macdonald council’s aim in supporting the event was to help increase the ability of residents to interact within their local community and enhance each participant’s quality of life.

He said the use of services such as digital printing and digital copying was growing every day, and people needed to keep up with the technology.

Online services, he added, were being introduced throughout many business and government organisations, which meant people needed to learn how to access important services and information online. This, Macdonald said, was why it was so important to support initiatives like the Year of Digital Inclusion and encourage community members to take part.

Training in digital skills will be the focus of a series of events to be held by Council throughout 2016.

The councillor said the City was committed to supporting digital inclusion through its efforts to ensure Geelong has the capability, skills, connectivity and infrastructure to fully embrace the benefits technology provides.
