Work begins on Whitehorse Centre redevelopment

Box Hill South residents and others throughout Whitehorse City are a step closer to enjoying the facilities of a brand-new performing arts centre, with construction now underway.

A project planning to convert the Whitehorse Centre into a cultural and arts hub that will service the area for many years to come began 11 years ago, and it included a carefully executed cost-benefit analysis of all available options, an in-depth business case and extensive consultation with community members.

In 2018, a competition was launched to attract innovative designs for the centre's redevelopment, and this attracted response from throughout Australia, according to then Mayor of Whitehorse Bill Bennett, who added:

“Council is transforming the Whitehorse Centre in Nunawading into a highly accessible, flexible and contemporary venue that will meet the diverse and changing needs of our community, users and patrons. The new centre will provide an expanded array of performing arts, functions and festival opportunities for generations to come.”

Bennett said the much-loved facility had been a major centre for community arts and entertainment for over 30 years, but, functionally, it was in need of a major upgrade.

Events at major venues such as the Whitehorse Centre are often advertised locally via strategic poster printing campaigns.

According to a recent council media release, the new centre's primary aim is to remain a community cultural and arts facility that, due to its redevelopment, will also be able to attract the cream of shows on tour around the country. Completion is scheduled for late 2023.
