City of Whitehorse residents can step back in time to the 1970s this month, during the annual Heritage Week
The City of Whitehorse annual Heritage Week event includes talks, exhibitions, and open days at local heritage buildings. People living in Box Hill South will not have to go far to explore their history, with exhibitions at the Box Hill Community Arts Centre and the Town Hall among the events.
An exhibition about life in the 1970s runs at the Whitehorse Art Space at the Town Hall until Saturday October 6 and features photography, fashion and art from the Ceramics Victoria and Whitehorse Art Collections. Catalogue printing enables visitors to take home a copy of all works in the Whitehorse Art Collection to look at again at home.
The Box Hill Community Arts Centre is hosting a collection of mementos from the era, donated by staff and users of the centre. The Domestic Bliss exhibition runs until Sunday September 23.
Other local events include a family workshop to make 70s crafts, a tour of the Box Hill Cemetery with members of the Surrey Hills Historical Society, and a tour of the Box Hill Town Hall. Further afield, events include an open day with traditional games at Schwerkolt Cottage and a screening of Red Dog, a film set in the 70s about a dog who lived in the outback, at the Whitehorse Civic Centre.
Some of the events are free, while others have a small charge. Many of the events need to be booked in advance.
Heritage Week runs from this Thursday, September 13 to Thursday, September 20, although some of the exhibitions run for longer. More information can be found on the City of Whitehorse website.
