Three Box Hill groups celebrate milestone events

Box Hill South residents were among many to help celebrate three local milestones achieved by prominent organisations, including the Box Hill Ballet Association, art group and tennis club.

Turning 70, the ballet association held an afternoon which included award presentations and speeches before a fabulous turnout of current and former students, friends and families. An exhibition, featuring costumes and photos, was also displayed in the local arts centre's gallery spaces.

In addition, Life Membership was awarded to President Sandra Walton, who has held the position for the past 15 years, and students also became models for the day in a colourful parade of costumes.

Established in 1952, the Box Hill Art Group also celebrated its 70th year.

Eric Harvey, secretary of the group, said that as well as drawing and paint classes, they offered activities such as workshops, life drawing, competitions and exhibitions, many of which have been advertised locally via the media and flyer printing campaigns.

A special exhibition to mark the 70th anniversary is scheduled to be on display at the local town hall in October, followed in December by a barbecue and installation of a time capsule at the community centre.

It was a belated 125th celebration for the Box Hill Tennis Club due to Covid but, established in 1895, the event brought together present and past members. Memorabilia and photos were on display, a commemorative plaque unveiled and a tree planted.
