According to a council spokesperson, the design captures the city's vision to create a theatre, function and festival centre that is both community centred and contemporary, as well as being flexible, accessible and welcoming to all. The spokesperson added:
"The new centre will provide an expanded array of arts and cultural opportunities for the entire Whitehorse community to enjoy for decades to come."
Glass has been used extensively to help connect the structure with the adjacent parkland, which is further enhanced by brick facades and scalloped architecture. Light fills the spacious interior of the building, while visitors will also be able to find many inviting spaces outside to gather, play and relax.
The centre will boast many key features, ranging from a spacious auditorium to seat 626 with a large stage and a studio theatre with 200 seats to a multipurpose dance and rehearsal studio. The design also includes a multipurpose function room and improved soundshell where outdoor events, including community festivals, will be hosted. Events such as these are often widely advertised via strategic flyer printing campaigns.
Work on the new performing arts centre, which also includes improved local car parking facilities, is scheduled to begin later this year, with completion expected late in 2023.
