Monet-inspired art goes on show in Whitehorse

Art lovers from Box Hill South will have the chance to see the work of a world-famous painter when a new exhibition opens in Whitehorse this week.

Jo Reitze was chosen by the city’s council as the Invited Artist for 2013 and will be displaying paintings of her Surrey Hills garden which have been created throughout the year. Reitze, who is well known in the art world, is a Fellow of the Victorian Arts Society and a member of the Melbourne Society of Women Painters and Sculptors.

Her collection, entitled The Artist’s Garden, is inspired by Claude Monet’s paintings of his own garden, an exhibition of which is currently being shown at the National Gallery of Victoria in central Melbourne. Reitze studied in France and was a frequent visitor to the Musee Marmottan in Paris, which houses an extensive collection of Monet’s work.

The National Gallery’s curator of international art, Sophie Matthiesson, will speak at the opening night of Reitze’s show, while the artist herself will talk about her paintings at special event on Saturday August 24th. Copies of her work will also be on sale thanks to the help provided by local printing companies.

The exhibition will run at the Whitehorse Artspace at Box Hill Town Hall from tomorrow until Saturday September 7. The gallery is open from 10:00am to 3:00pm on Tuesday and Friday, from 9:00am to 5:00pm on Wednesday and Thursday, and from midday to 4:00pm on Saturday. Entry to the exhibition is free, but places for the floor talk must be booked in advance.
