Migrant Information Centre multicultural expo at Box Hill

The Migrant Information Centre’s Multicultural Expo attracted ten culturally diverse communities to Box Hill South to share their individual experiences as carers or people who require care. The expo attracted approximately 160 residents from the Whitehorse region including 19 aged and carer service providers that operate in the area.

Lac Viet Seniors Group from Ashburton put on a dancing display at the expo while all of the groups bought printed Brochures to promote their communities.

Linda Tan, the Migrant Information Centre’s community partners project officer said,

"Residents and service providers have reported the informative and interpersonal exchange was a very valuable experience."

Ms Tan also discovered through the course of the expo that,

"People from certain cultures did not necessarily identify themselves as carers, although they are performing that role for a parent, spouse or other family member. If they don’t identify themselves as carers, there is little chance that they will seek carer support services. The carers now know who to call when they need help."

The expo was funded by the Department of Health and Ageing under its Community Partnerships Program. The aim of the Community Partnerships Program is to work with ‘people from culturally and linguistically diverse background and link them with community service providers in the region.’

Judging from the positive response from the various community groups that attended the day, it would seem that the expo has achieved precisely what it was hoped it would- create stronger links with service providers and a to have a wonderfully collaborative and fun day.
