Jane Austen descendent to speak at Artspace

Box Hill South residents will have an opportunity to hear more about literary icon Jane Austen when her fifth great niece visits the Whitehorse Artspace shortly.

Caroline Jane Knight will reveal all in a special talk entitled `Jane and Me’ to be held in conjunction with the Be Persuaded - Jane Austen exhibition.

According to Councillor Andrew Davenport, attendees can expect an informative and entertaining address, and he added:

“Caroline was raised in the age-old traditions of the Austen family and will share a unique insight into growing up in the shadows of a literary great on a once vast English country estate.

“She will reveal family photographs, artefacts and anecdotes from this very private family and give us a glimpse into Jane Austen’s world.”

The Jane Austen Literacy Foundation founder grew up in the Austen family residence in Chawton, in which her talented relative also lived.

It was also the place where many of Jane’s famous works were conceived and written.

Cr. Davenport said Caroline’s appearance at the Whitehorse Artspace will celebrate the exhibition, which showcases intricate fashions, many of which are hand-worked and are indicative of the Regency period associated with Jane Austen’s living years.

Featured items include shoes, bonnets, underclothes and dresses, plenty of which have often been seen in graphic design format and images throughout the pages of history-themed fashion Books.

Caroline’s presentation will be followed by morning tea at the Whitehorse Artspace this Saturday, July 13. The exhibition closes on July 28.
