History on display for annual Heritage Week

Whitehorse residents have the chance to discover more about the area’s history this month, when the annual Heritage Week takes place.

This year, the theme of Heritage Week is water, in honour of it being the United Nations’ International Year of Water Co-operation. As part of the event, attendees can explore the area’s pools and lakes, as well as a watering hole of a different kind with an exhibition featuring the White Horse Hotel.

Those from Box Hill South will find a number of events happening locally, including the chance to learn how to cook authentic Italian food on Thursday September 12, and a tour of the town hall will take place on Tuesday September 17.

Families will have the chance to enjoy a visit to the Schwerkolt Cottage open day in Mitcham on Sunday September 15. Young visitors will be entertained by the petting zoo and magic show, while adults explore the many craft displays - including weaving and woodturning demonstrations.

A screening of the 1976 movie Storm Boy on Friday September 13 may also interest families. The film tells the story of a boy and his pet pelican who adventure around the South Australian coast – it will be shown at the Whitehorse Civic Centre.

There are many more events and exhibitions being held as part of Heritage Week, and brochure printers have been called upon to create a leaflet containing details of what is available.

Heritage Week runs from September 12-19. Most events are free but bookings are essential. For more information, visit the City of Whitehorse council website.
