History comes alive near Box Hill South

The Box Hill Historical Society is holding an intriguing information afternoon exploring the history of the Box Hill Cemetery.

The afternoon will be presented by historian Dr Celestina Sagazio, who wrote a book about the history of the Box Hill Cemetery to commemorate the 150th anniversary of its establishment. Dr Sagazio is a consultant historian who works in Melbourne and has an interest in cemeteries and their conservation and history. The Annual General Meeting of the Society will follow the presentation. At this meeting, the annual report will be received, and new members may be elected to the Society’s committee.

The Box Hill Historical Society was established in 1963. It aims to preserve the history of Box Hill and surrounding suburbs, including Box Hill South, Mont Albert and Burwood, and is focused on collecting historical documents and photographs from those regions. The society also offers walking tours of the cemetery and local streets. Historical societies often use brochure printing so that tour participants can follow maps as they walk around significant historical areas.

The History of the Box Hill Cemetery event is run by the Box Hill Historical Society and will be held on Sunday, August 20 at 2pm on the first floor of the Box Hill Library, more specifically in the Bert Lewis Room. The library is located at 1040 Whitehorse Road, Box Hill. Admission is free, but a gold coin donation is appreciated.
