Fine Impressions exhibit highlights handmade books

The Cowen Gallery at the State Library of Victoria is currently presenting the exhibit Fine Impressions: Printmaking and Artist's Books in Melbourne 1999-2010 which will run until February 16, 2012; admission is free and runs daily from 10 am. Book and art fans from all over the area, including Box Hill South should be flocking to this exhibit.

This exhibit features handmade Books created by 20 of Melbourne’s own artists and printmakers; each artist has put his or her own individual touches to these Books using unique designs, paper, typography and binding techniques. Some of the artists involved in this exhibit are Angela Cavalieri, Bruno Leti, Louise Jennison and Gracia Haby.

At a time when sales of the printed book are declining and when ebooks seem to be taking over, it is heart-warming to see such an exhibit. It makes you believe that there will always be a place for Print in our world. Many artists throughout the word have taken to the art of bookmaking. It is a genre that lends itself to originality and artistic experimentation. If an artist is so inclined, he or she can have a different design on each page.

Handmade Books are not all that difficult to create for those of us who are not professional artists. Many people create their own Books as a tribute to a loved one or to highlight a special event in their lives. While the Books in the Fine Impressions exhibit are one-of-a-kind works of art that will never be reproduced or copied, local printing services could help you to reproduce your book so that it can be shared with others.

No matter what form the book takes, this exhibit lets it be known that printed Books are not dead yet.
