The idea to transform what was previously a drab laneway into a vibrant and happening community hub was initiated by resident and business owner Amy To. Its merit was immediately seen by the City of Whitehorse, which provided the funds and manpower to make it a reality in line with its commitment to help communities and businesses thrive.
The project was executed and completed within 14 days, and Ms To said she could not be happier with the end result, which also took into account the views and ideas of other local traders.
Attractions such as Blackburn Village's urban picnic park are often highlighted as part of local and tourist brochure printing campaigns.
After operating her restaurant “Amor Mexico” in Forest Hill for 16 years, Ms To recently moved the business to Blackburn, and she has been delighted with this latest response and action from the council, saying:
“It’s a space for residents and I hope it will drive a lot of business for local traders. It will play a vital role in reinvigorating the area and driving the local economy.”
As for Amor Mexico, Ms To said she sees it as more than a restaurant – she sees it as a community conscious cultural hub where locals and visitors of all ages can connect, celebrate and create.
