Councils stand united for more sustainable buildings

In a move that is being supported by 23 councils across Victoria and is set to change planning requirements for new buildings in Box Hill South and throughout the city, Whitehorse Council has voted in favour of introducing guidelines for a more sustainable design.

As a result, the council is seeking an amendment by the Victorian Government to the current planning scheme relating to new buildings, which will increase the sustainability requirements.

If the changes get the go-ahead by Planning Minister Lizzie Blandthorn, the new rules would not affect single dwellings but rather apply to new unit and apartment builds.

The council has several aims with the proposed amendment. This includes supporting the wellbeing and health of occupants into the future, reducing energy and resource consumption, and the ultimate protection of the local natural environment.

If successful, the move will also help the council respond and tackle to climate change, according to Mayor of Whitehorse Tina Liu, who added:

“The proposed changes for new developments reflect tangible actions that can be applied to create meaningful outcomes in our efforts to make our buildings more energy efficient and environmentally friendly.”

The mayor described the work as “incredibly important” for all councils involved.

Printing services have often been used to produce educational Flyers and Brochures on the ways community members can help in the pursuit of global environmental sustainability.

Liu said among key benefits of taking action now would be to provide a more comfortable and healthier environment for future building occupants.
