Council news set to be delivered differently

The community newspaper published monthly for residents in Box Hill South and across the City of Whitehorse is set to be distributed in a new way.

Until now, the newspaper, which gives readers updates on the city’s projects, events, consultations and news, has been delivered to letterboxes.

However, this method has been deemed unreliable by some residents. Others say those who may not recognise the publication as containing news from the council are treating it much like junk mail. There is also the issue of paper waste, according to a council spokesperson, who said it was time to improve access to the newspaper for all residents.

To achieve this, the council is set to trial a new method of distribution to ensure everyone who is keen to receive a copy can get a dry, clean copy reliably and easily. Such materials can be prepared by professional printing services.

The current letterbox deliveries will be halted from November this year through to March 2022, the spokesperson said.

From October this year, the council will place Copies of Whitehorse News in display Boxes that have clear signage at the front of supermarkets, in community centres, neighbourhood houses, child health centres, Aqualinks and libraries, and via care staff providing in-home services for older residents. Access to digital editions will also be streamlined.

Residents are urged to complete an online survey about the proposed distribution trial, with responses due to be received by July 26.
